If you’re starting to hear the faint sound of jingle bells ringing in your ear, you’re not alone. The holidays are right around the corner – and will be here before you know it. This year is set to be a unique holiday season when it comes to shopping and gathering. The good news is, after two years, it’s now safer for families and friends to gather and celebrate this festive season together. The bad news is inflation is making shopping for gifts, holiday decor, holiday party clothes, and hosting essentials a little tougher on the wallet.

To get a sense of how shoppers are approaching their celebrations and shopping this holiday season, we surveyed 511 U.S. ZMG consumers over the age of 18. Here’s what we found.

According to our survey, 98% of shoppers are either excited about getting into the holiday spirit, attending a holiday event, or hosting an event. However, as noted above, following this excitement is concern about spending due to inflation and higher prices. Where are shoppers willing to spend their hard-earned money?
According to our survey, shoppers are primed to spend in these three areas:
87% of shoppers are planning to host 1-3 events this holiday season
While almost half (48%) of shoppers are planning to host this upcoming season, the majority of shoppers (87%) expect to host one to three events. For those planning on hosting these events, 59% are leaving the shopping for October and November, aligning with general holiday shopping timing.
81% of shoppers will purchase décor based on seasonal sales and compelling offers
Like shoppers who are hosting, shoppers who are decorating for the holidays are also triggered to buy new holiday décor based on what catches their eye (66%) and price (54%)

However, while other factors like recommendations (37%) and brand loyalty (36%) will also influence shoppers’ décor buying, the price remains the main deciding factor – with 81% of shoppers saying that they will purchase décor based on seasonal sales and compelling offers
